Baba Ramdev Evicted, Section 144 Imposed in Delhi

India Legal News: The Supreme Court will hear a PIL (Public Interest Litigation) today seeking a directive towards the Central and the state of Delhi on the alleged brutal action against Baba Ramdev, a Yoga guru and a TV star. The Baba and his followers were forcibly evicted by the Delhi Police last week after permission for organizing a Yoga camp was disallowed. A prohibitory order under Section 144 of Cr.PC has been clamped by the state government in areas like Hauz Qazi, Kamla Market and Indraprastha Estate in Central Delhi and the entire New Delhi area. While there has been a nationwide protest against the Baba, the Yoga guru played a victim and has urged the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) and the National Commission for Women (NCW) to look into the ‘atrocity’ conducted by the Delhi Police on women, men and children. Over 100 people injured and 71 are critical. The SC has reserved the matter for hearing during the second week of July and asked the officials to furnish details.

Sec 144 should be used only in cases of civil unrest and riots. It should not be used when there is a legitimate protest unless it turns violent. It was a peaceful gathering and there was no provocation from Baba Ramdev's side. Govt. is at fault for misusing sec 144 for which they must be held accountable and made to pay compensation to the injured.
