India Legal News: Just a day before Bihar goes polling, the EC (Election Commission) has asked the Law Ministry to issue an ordinance which prohibits various electronic and print media to conduct and disseminate opinion polls. The EC has requested the Representation of the People Act, 1951 to be amended.
Requesting the ban on opinion polls on an ‘urgent’ basis, KF Wilfred, secretary, EC stressed that the restriction would be in the wider interest of free and fair elections.
Writing a letter to the Law Ministry, Wilfred also said that such polls create ‘prejudicial effect' on the minds of electors.
Assembly elections for 243-members will start in Bihar from Thursday and continue for one month.
