Common Wealth Games: Is The Queen Angry?

India news reports on Common wealth games continue to appall and shock the nation. People are talking about it everywhere with sarcasm than pride. Media reports from the UK indicate that the British Queen is angry over these allegations of corruption involving a London-based company and the baton relay of the Common Wealth Games, which is going to be held in October 2010, in Delhi. Apparently, it is reported that the Queen is furious about these allegations, which she views as a disgrace of the royal baton. The baton relay, which consists of a message from the Queen, is carried by runners across the world, before reaching the host city, Delhi.

Common Wealth Games: The Queen Dismisses the Media Reports

According to the August 2010 reports of the Sunday Express, the controversy is about AM films, a UK based Indian-owned company that has used the baton royal, to cash in on the royal brand. Further, it is alleged that the Common Wealth Games Organizing Committee has paid more than £450,000 to AM films, operated by Ash Patel. The amount was paid for services, such as to provide big TV screens, barriers and temporary toilets and transportation for players and officials, during the UK launch of the baton relay last October. The company was paid, without any official paperwork, for its services, for the launch, which was attended by the President of India, Pratibha Patil and the Queen, Elizabeth II.

The Chairman of the Common Wealth Organizing Committee, Mr. Suresh Kalmadi has also accepted the fact that the payments were made to the firm without any written contract. His excuse has been that there was no time to enter into a written contract. Following these murky allegations against AM Films and its connection with the CWG, three senior officials of the CWG Organizing Committee have been suspended and some have resigned over the corruption charges.

Also, the Committee has formed a panel comprising of three members, to look into the matter. Further, there are allegations of tampering of a letter by the Indian High Commission, in the UK, which allegedly recommended AM films. Nonetheless, the Commission has denied the charges, of recommending the firm.

Amidst these allegations, the Queen has dismissed media reports on AM Films. Further, according to a close associate of the Queen, she was not even aware about the alleged financial scam pertaining to the event. The Common Wealth Games is scheduled to be held in New Delhi from 3rd to 14th October, 2010, and the allegations of corruption pertaining to this event is making more headlines across the world than any other news story.
