Discrimination at Bloom Energy

I am a 5 month old employee of Bloom Energy, Mumbai, who was forcefully asked to resign yesterday. In 5 months i was asked to report to 3 different managers, my functional team was changed once and job responsibilities and deliverables changed many more times. Despite this, I adapted to the continuous change. In spite of delivering results, my duties were terminated due to discrimination. I continuously sought HR inputs, but I never got a single response and one fine day I was forced to leave in 30 minutes. The harassment was to this extent that my email access was blocked even before my termination was discussed with me and I could submit a resignation letter. My need for stability was used for Bloom's benefit where I succumbed to the pressure and resigned only due to the requirement of getting a relieving letter. Are people like me, so vulnerable that our career prospects are at the discretion of just one man. Please advise.

This is not we expect from the companies like Bloom energy. Few people make the system bad. I heard KR CEO of the company on 60 minutes, very impressive but creating the work culture like this is not good for comapnies growth.
At the end just want to say, save culture create good culture, that will be the only strenght to take company up if KR want to do it.

You can sue the person responsible for the harassment provided you have adequate proof for all that you stated. Now that you have resigned, I am afraid you are left with no evidence except your own, while the person who did these will deny them.

Thank you for your input advocate Prabhakar. Even though I have resigned I have enough evidence to support my claim. Do you think I stand a chance against the big corporate discrimination. Please advice.

I think there should be a legal help to deal with such descrimination issues everywhere

Bloom Energy does not give opportunities equally to every employee to perform or even evaluate. I think there should be governing body within the company that looks in the matter before firing an individual.
It should be an evaluated and convincing decision rather than a individualistic ego driven fate!

Hi Supriya,
I really empathise with you for the hapless and sick enviornment in the Bloom Energy Pvt. Ltd. I myself have a firsthand experience of the extreme form of Racial Abuse and mental harassment from the Psichic Bosses at Californnia and Cowards Manmohan Singh like managers at here in Mumbai office, in the very same company.
This resulted me to search for other options in the market and Bingooo... with in few weeks I found a much better technically and economically promising job.
I wish you good luck from the bottom of my heart.

Its nice you share your point that Bloom energy has a history of doing this to employee. Same time I am happy that one person bring it out. There are these cases but few take the guds to come out and save people or teach company to save employee. If you both are from same company there must be others who suffered or going to suffer. be together in this fight and play an important role to save company and save employees. good luck.....
Good luck to companies HR and CEO, hopefully you will save your comapany Bloom energy from these kind of managers and at last the universe from Carbon.

SK,
I heard from my friend this company hire people only from south India Tamilian only. I heard there is majorities Tamilian in it. I know 2 people who were from North India both were fired like you. They initially work for 4 to 5 years then suddenly a south Indian manager came and he fired these two guys.
What kind of regionalism this company is doing.
I feel bad what happen with you and good that you bring this issue up. and see few old same company people are catching the news.
Actually my friend send my resume then same manager replied him, but she is from Delhi why she will come and work with us. lol!!! Today I am happy that I did not get interviewed in Bloom Energy to waste my energy.

I was working with KLA, Tencor, India based in Chennai. I also had the same issues with my management as like Bloom Energy employees having from their firm. But in my case my company helped me financially and noticed me before 1 month to find another suitable position. They gave me 6 month advance salary. The company took care of each employees before firing an individual.
I must say Bloom also has to do something like this to benefit their employees who are suffering these issues with their management.

I will tell you people more about Bloom energy culture for employees may be little latter.
But here is a small example...... I resign from the company 2 months back...that time company stop me. I had my plans for my future but I think about the company.
My general manager (......) stops me by saying Bloom needs you. I agree same manager after 2 month ask me to resign as I did earlier. And company HR (....) support the stuff.
That kind of culture they keep for employee. It looked its EGO problem of Bloom, you can't resign we will send you home :)
I will definitly say Good Luck to new joinees in Bloom Energy, Beware of GM

friend,,,, u really appeared in an inadequate situation, its a pity that there is no governmental or state company or inspectorate which can protect the laws of employees, everywhere people face with such a problem, as well as in my country where the state often is not responsible for the rights of its employees...
But don't give up!!!

If you find this answer helpful, click Yes

Well, I'm from the US and I know that here in this country , any kind of discrimination or harassment are crimes punishable by law so no matter how large a company might be you have the right to compensation. I would sue them without thinking twice . These people think the own the world but they DON'T . The employees are the one who makes the company without them there would be no company . Justice and jobs free of discrimination or harassment for ALL !

O M G..!
Seems like black clouds are once again thundering over bloomenergy india pvt limited. I feel very sad that i am also victim of bloomenergy, mumbai branch. After working so hard for more than 3 years..and getting good appraisals and contributing for bloom's growth, one fine day..General Manager -Bloom [mumbai] just asked me to resign because He thinks He can hire 3 technicians in my salary and run the show on less cost !!! I told him KR values caliber, talent and appreciated me in person for my contribution...but General Manager told, "we dont require me because i have given good training to juniors and now they can handle."!! I am surprised to see that there is NO procedure to retain the good talent in bloomenergy mumbai. It was not like that during early stages of bloom, but as and when bloom grew with time...all talent from banglore and mumbai fired by new management team, without any solid grounds of reason..! Its very difficult to work under such an unpridictable environment where you never knew if today can be your last day in bloomenergy !!!!!!

I blame to senior level management of bloom, because its their duty to see and make regular honest checks in all their world-wide branches. They must ensure that no manager is on his ego-trip to satisfy his sick soul and giving priority to his own personal agenda instead of joining hands with KR to save the planet !!

GOD save bloom !
Ameen !

It is shocking to see that companies like Bloom Energy of this repute have nasty employment practices. I am definitely disappointed that a sustainable green company is so unsustainable and unethical towards its employees.

I am glad to see such a positive response and like minded people's support towards this forum. I am still seeking help from both the Vice President- Engineering and HR, and some sort of guidance from KR Sridhar CEO of Bloom Energy, but even they seem to be ignorant towards the major troubles faced by negligible entry level employees at Bloom Energy Mumbai. Is this the role of Management in such corporate 'don't respond and conveniently ignore issues of small employees as it does not affect their lives'?

If you find this answer helpful, click Yes

Yes, Bloom Energy in India, Mumbai ops was functioning very well until this fellow took over - he is a corporate survivor, and has played games with several talented Mumbai personnel. The atmosphere at Bloom India, Mumbai has certainly been vitiated - what was a progressive and superb technical unit in 2010 is now a unit that operates like Orwell's 1984 - with everyone looking behind their back. What is pathetic to see is how a technically incompetent fellow like him, running Mumbai's operations, finds fault with people who have paid their dues to the company, and eventually finds ground to fire them and in many cases, damaging their career irreparably. Bloom Energy Corporation at Sunnyvale has good personnel and respects core technical work but if Mumbai is being run like this, its repercussions will be felt soon in their global operations. Legally most of us cant do anything due to reasons that are confidential. However, I bet you, if any of us worked at Sunnyvale, with the US law, it would have required far more effort to fire us than we had to face in India.

This company's name should be Bloomenergy South Indian Pvt Ltd or Bloom energy Tamilian pvt ltd.
Being it office in Mumbai, They go for hiring in Tamil, NIT Trichy and CECRI.
They never visit VJTI, IIT Bombay best colleges in Mumbai. Leave it I dont know how many NITs you will get on the way to NIT Trichy but they always land there.
Why?
Are they go there to find talent?

I am working with a local newspaper. The discrimination faced by you relates to the mass in many ways. Also, the chain of comments going here is adding lot of weight to the issue being discussed. Such things should reach everybody. It would be good to discuss your story.

This is very unfortunate. Company like Bloom energy should think twice while making these decisions. Rights of the employees should be secured in all circumstances. The hypocritical attitude of the higher level employees in these companies are prime reason of their decline. Company shouldn't really think that employees can't do better than this, rather a supportive environment should be given to them. It will eventually make it a successful story. Anyway, since I am from USA, I found that this kind of harassment is not acceptable here. Laws are strict and rights of employees are secured. Even Indian government should intervene and protect employees rights. Multinational companies from around the world are targeting for easy and cheap employees but they shouldn't forget that Indian employees are very smart and on the top of that, they work very hard. At last, do care of the employees and they will surely take care of your business.

Although I am a proud employee of Bloom Energy, and company is doing impressive development on energy products, it is doing equally bad in building culture outside US. There is a vast difference in culture across its global offices.
Its Indian offices, particularly Mumbai operation is worst in terms of cultural values and employee’s rights. Mumbai operation is managed by an egoistic, emotional and underserving GM who always focuses on building his credits. He lacks all leadership ability which can be seen from his funny body language. He certainly favors some of the employees and tries to oversell to higher management. One of the poor aspects which Bloom needs to be serious about is building its middle level management. Currently these managers are highly insecure and mediocre. This creates non-transparency in performance evaluation and actual appraisal process. I am disconcerted that in spite of having elite higher management team, a single person like this GM is disturbing the integrity of Bloom’s values.

I am surprised if Shiv sena in mumbai get to know this regionalism or should i say tamilianism happening in godrej and boyce, vikhroli...then what will happen to mumbai office of bloom... !!! Its high time to teach this Fu*kin GM a lesson...I heard there was ppl in old times like Ravi Osval, who went all over IITs in 2006 and hired balanced talent from all over India. This is what MNC culture is...! Bloom must also put heavy fine on that Jerk who hired this Tamilian Blood sucker so called GM of Mumbai office !!!

If you find this answer helpful, click Yes

This Mumbai GM, a self acclaimed excellent manager, has shown his managerial skills looking at this issue. He don't have leadership qualities as somebody mentioned above, GM himself accepts that. Such a shame in having GM of no leadership quality. He has shown this with his non-inspirational activities. He is neither wise in words nor wise in deeds.
He has not shown any technical competency nor has shown managerial expertise. Sad part is that the old efficient employees who don't support his act are shown exit by him. Those who licks his *** got promoted and those who don't are HR looks helpless being his puppet due to their own reasons of job insecurity. Under such an highly insecure atmosphere one should not expect creative, innovative output from Mumbai facility which is primarily a research wing.
Should he need to introspect about his eligibility to throw out performing employees when he himself being a non-performer against employee's expectation, I think so.
HR really need to take bold steps faster before employees breakout in this suffocating environment at Mumbai. Save Mumbai facility which was best known for its work culture.

I just came to know from Googling, that this company is connected to some owner of Google.com and having some activities at NASA, near sunnyvale area in USA. All fired so called efficient [most of them] employees had to invest huge amount of money to purchase bloom shares, and they are somehow concerned about bloom because they invested in bloom's fate. Throw this "thirukumar" whatever sick guy [whose linkedin profile link is given above] out of mumbai and get the best man for the sake of green planet ! One fu*kin egoistic jerk can not decide the fate of so many ppl who invested in bloom's shares !!!

Felt sad on hearing that many are suffering because of Bloom Energy Mumbai. I am also one of those who have suffered here. Here is my story:
I had been working at Bloom, and things were all fine, when all of a sudden the senior management alleged that I was not doing my job, and not performing, and if I didn’t improve, I would be fired. Despite increasing my efforts, I was told I was not working, and hence I had to leave. They were not even willing to hear me out, about what I was doing, and why I was doing it! During this time, no one could give me a clear idea what I was doing wrong, and how I should improve. They said these things were “intangible” and could not be articulated or explained. It’s ironic that I was paid my quarterly bonus during this time, for achieving all my quarterly goals!! Even after I resigned, they did not allow me to serve my notice period, but insisted that I leave immediately! And I was made to wait for a month to get my last salary. And I know many others who have faced similar situations.
Senior management at Bloom need to recognize that just having some technology will not make them a successful company; it’s the company employees that make a company successful. It’s surprising that senior management with fancy MBA degrees fail to recognize this. They feel firing people is the easier option, rather than helping the employee achieve her/his potential. They do not care about the difficulty an employee goes through, and the effect on an employee’s career and the employee’s family. Such actions will only harm the company in the long run.
I guess that’s where the difference between a rotten company, and a good company lies…

Hi Puys
It is amazing that this blog has gained popularity.I would like to highlight some specific points related with the current Working Conditions of Bloom Energy(Mumbai).
1)For past 6 months approximately 12 employees have been terminated and some have resigned(To be noted as self-resigned by the management). In a strength of 60 odd this tends to be somewhere around 20% of the strength.
2)A very competitive atmosphere(negative sense) has been created which has created cut throat competition among the peers leading to diversion in doing unwanted stuff and reducing the core-competency of R&D and doing irrelevant projects.THere have been instances when the ball has only been pushed from Mumbai side to Sunnyvale side just to avoid the Blame game.
3)Strange rules and regulations have been imposed trying to build in MNC culture which actually has spoiled the passion of many of the old veterans working in here for past 5 years merely making them competitive .
Now coming to the real fact the BE Mumbai has grown from a strength of 25 odd ppl to 65-70 odd ppl in a year or two.Heavy monetary investments have been made(New Empty Workspace) and lots of commitments have been made by the GM himself that he would try to develop a nice Business Model and pull in the Business from Mumbai which has terribly failed in the sense with comparison t the investments.
But has he ever worked on the Grass Root level of hiring the right people for the right job?
Has he tried to bring in actually who are required?
The answer for this is NO.
Now you have a stage where the Management have started to question his credibilities and as usual he has played the dirty Indian Crab's Game of pushing the blame on the so called newly and old Hired Employees. So the best method has been utilised by him of forcibly asking the employees to self-resign.
I wish Bloom Best of luck for its leadership and would be glad that this link reaches its Sunnyvale Counterparts. If i would have been there still I would have done it myself........
Regards

Its really disappointing to hear such acts from sought after companies like Bloom energy. This girl, worked well got fired and then many more stories like this that came out. Young job seekers like me should be aware about such wrong doings so that we can wisely choose a company for job and even for internship. Would like to write about GM’s foxes who are part of GM’s dirty political web in Bloom, Mumbai.
GM have 2/3 foxes in the company. One, Pinky Patel is at most 8 months old to the company. He have neither shown his credibility in work nor demonstrated any skills/ competency. In fact, he betrayed his reporting manager and played dirty game with GM. Greedy GM had sent him to US to bring projects which he had failed measurably. After coming back, he didn’t have room or wasn’t been justified for his post in Bloom, Mumbai. Now as he was GM’s loyal fox, GM had forced him to be SK’s manager and given all credits to him what SK was working on and fired SK to save his trusty Fox.
One more lady Idly Mohan, who joined as a fresher few months back was been given to manage entire Mumbai operation project. She lacks professionalism; don’t have understanding of even what is Project life cycle is (as expected from any fresher). Now people who are with Bloom from last 5+ years and built credibility in Bloom over period of time is answerable to this fresher. It is not about a fresher, but the disgusting / annoying/ illiterate feature of this lady flattered by GM’s immunity and empowerment.

I had an earlier post in this forum. Now I noticed that my experience was very similar to Godfather's post. However, in my case, upon reflection, they decided to let me go about 1 year prior to actually relieving me. Of course, they never communicated their expectations of me in the beginning, and a couple of them in Sunnyvale developed prejudice against me, which was quickly picked up by our GM, who slowly created conditions for my eventual departure, by not making me part of any of his plans in Mumbai. Junior engineers were part of his grand scheme of operations while I continued to be marginalized - all the while, he kept arguing that the company could not justify the role for a senior person like me, in Mumbai. Despite the fact the my last 5 months at Bloom were the most productive, and most intense in technical content, I was asked to leave when I was right in the middle of solving critical problems. My point of contact in Sunnyvale was shocked to know that I was leaving!

Bloom Mumbai it appears only wants very junior level engineers and technicians, who take orders only. There is little scope for innovation and new ideas from Mumbai, because the entire system is driven from Sunnyvale. It is very difficult for anyone in the middle of his/her technical career to contribute effectively at Bloom - it is a terrible experience to be laid off in the middle of your career; of course the GM in Mumbai is the major problem but quite frankly, radical decisions are taken at Sunnyvale too, and some people are very fickle in their judgment of people - this impacts Mumbai personnel immensely since they are so far away from the heat of action and sometimes, poor communication between personnel between the two sites generates bad vibes. All in all, a very tenuous if not an unhealthy working environment.

Sadly the turmoil in Mumbai does not even register a blip in Sunnyvale's radar. They are jumping around in happiness that they are now going to be supplying 4.8 MW to Apple in NC - big business.

But I have heard that in several multinationals set up in India, the situation is very fragile in their India operations. These problems arise from wrong management principles, by people who think they are too smart and do not value human enterprise. I dont think this is a Tamil vs non-Tamil issue. I know in Mumbai they hired mostly from CECRI, because it was a premier electrochemical institute. I personally interview them and found them to fit very well. The GM insisted on hiring from NIT Tiruchy, simply because KR and one of our senior VP's studied from there - and probably it is good corporate practice to do some brown nosing. And many Tamilians have left the company too! I would prefer if this matter does not become politicized with other linguistic groups - it is enough if Mumbai Indians can have rivalry with Chennai Super Kings!

It is surprising that no action is taken against this ediot working in Bloom's mumbai Office. This tells us that the senior management is strongly supporting him or using him for executing what they want to do with the employees. We cannot completely denie that senior management is not supporting his "tamil recruitment mission".

Who says that bloom energy is recruiting only tamil candidates, they are recruiting good no. of local people..but u knw what.. except some old employees , most of the locals are at technician level...nice strategy Bloom.. Now Bloom has only few people from north india. Resume will be shortlisted based on the region, in rare cases even if resume is shorlisted for non tamil candidate, he or she will be rejected later and even if got selected, will be thrown out of company later. The bad side of this person even for tamil people is that, he is very egoist and will stop favoring if his ego gets hurt.

He is technically incapable, lacks leadership qualities and even zero with management principles. It is unbelievable that he manages to survive in a company like bloom and continuing the dirty job politics.
No company can survive with unethical practices and sooner or later they will have to pay for it, if action is not immediately taken against the individuals responsible for spoiling the culture....

I got to know about this post from Bloom Energy Facebook page posted by some bloom employee. It was shocking post but more than that it is a shocking news when i visited this link. It forced me to write here.
It looked there is something wrong in Bloom outside USA, why we can't create a better work environmental outside our country. I experienced people had a great respect for USA culture even outside USA. But what i am seeing here is really bad.
Why bloom is failing in generating a good work ethics in India? Its bad name not only for Bloom but for also USA. Why other countries people will work for USA companies if they will just work on big technologies not on employees?
Even after so many comments showing the stories of so many peoples, company is failing to take some action.

It appears from various contributions that ill-treating and terminating employees is a general practice at Bloom Energy. If this is a regular task at Bloom Energy, there stands a good chance to take some legal action against this organization. Remember, there has to be sufficient, legally justifiable and morally correct grounds to terminate an employee by an organization. An employee can demand for information and justification. I would advice all suffered employees to think about the incorrect actions done against you and collectively come forward to fight for justice.

Law is for all!

Its funny that Bloom GM (Mumbai) likes to spend a lot of time with girl/ female candidates. Its really serprised that he got a good payment for that work. Why he only want to motivate girl candidates to grow up by spending hours and hours, sometime by closing doors too :). Is he confident that guys are enough motivated in Bloom?
He take girls candidate interviews for atleast 2 -3 hrs. Even he dont miss 2 -3 hrs interview time with girls at technician levels. How much free he is to spend 1 hr daily with a perticular technician again girl only, by sending the boy techs out of lab. What he is teaching inside a close door.. Fuel cell or politics?
I'nt its funny? He made PP a girl both spend lot of time to discuss....I dont know what they discuss neither her work shows?
I wish to apply for GM position becouse this is only position where you got money with funny entertainment inside closed door.

1 month of this post, with good response. More than 35 comments means 1 comment almost everyday. I am following it from last 15 days. Interesting firings !!!
Its common in cooperates these days. Friends firing does not mean you were not performing, it may be business need.
By thinking so I initially ignore the post, then suddenly one word attract me in almost all the posts, GM Mumbai and one person shared his LinkedIn account.
Surprisingly, I know this guy from my Cyprus Days. He was Jerk, he will destroy the working environmental of the company, do some changes, will make system unstable to justify his existence.
I dont know how he is contributing in Fuel cell company? and how this technically incompetent person got job in such a great company. His job in Bloom itself shows that Bloom management lacks in making the hiring judgement. He make fool of higher management and with same reason he got kicked out from his previous job.
It's difficult for Bloom to fire him on these acts initially, they may take few months. But that's his history and future. Firing is common for this egoist person, he will fire and got fired.
Do he still have a habit of spending lot of time with female employee ? Just was curious!!!
If you remember Greg Chappell Indian coach, the way he made Indian team unstable, this person is of same kind. Some or all of you has to play a role of Dada to save your organization.
Good Luck !!!!!

I am not agree on Tamil- Non Tamil issue, i know you interviewed CECRI people and they were good but my question is You only interviewed CECRI guys :)
I hope you got my point. And regarding NIT Trichy again its not a good practice if your CEO and CTO were from same college, then all the coming people will be of same standards.....some time it looked funny. Same time it give a good fun to enjoy Mumbai Indian Vs Chennai Super King at office but IPL comes yearly once.

Great success to this blog. Bloom management is working on their stupid Culture to make it better. GM highjeck the Mumbai office and such a ashamed person is not leaving the company. After this blog company is working to take his power back. After seeing GM's interest for girls the girls are taken out from his suppervision.
Still some questions are open:
Will Bloom management will able to save culture?
Will Bloom Management can save Mumbai office from the kingdon of this stupid GM?
Will Bloom Management will be sucessfull to find another Tamilian GM?
Will Bloom Management can save time of Mumbai girls employees from this Therki GM?
Will Bloom Mumbai keep hiring tamilians?
As no north indian is left in company so to whome they will fire now?
Will Bloom go for placement other than NIT Trichy and CECRI?

I must appreciate the higher management to tackle the situation after seeing outburst of Bloomers in this blogging site.
HR have done a great job in streamlining the stuff to set things right.
GM is getting a chance to work rightfully. He needs to be careful in:
1. Translating higher management recent feedback to action without dilution/ manipulation.
2. Consider diversity of this country in recruitment process. Yes. May be there are more fresh engineers in down south in the field of electrochemistry. But it’s hard to understand 15:1 disproportionate ratio of total employees’ head count. It’s not good for bloom itself. HR knows that very well and had been inline before GM’s entry.
