It started on April 1, 2010 and aims at taking a head count of citizens of India to prepare a National Population Register (NPR). The first person to have provided date for the NPR was President Pratibha Patil.

It is important to note that Census India 2011 will happen in 2 phases i.e. April to September 2010 and the second phase will start from 9th February, 2011.

What is the Census of India 2011 all about?

The Census of India 2011 is a poll through which citizens of India are being surveyed to compile a population-oriented database. Photographs and fingerprints will be taken as part of the process. On completion of the census, a unique NPR ID card will be issued to every citizen.

What types of data are collected for Census of India 2011?

The Census of India 2011 comprises collection of 2 types of data:

  1. Data on your House & Assets: A total of 35 questions are being asked. These questions are about your house and facilities you in there, assets, possessions, etc.
  2. NPR: There is a separate form for NPR data that enlists name, sex, place and date of birth, marital status, name of parents & spouse, address (temporary and permanent) educational qualification, and occupation.

How is the data being collected for the Census of India 2011?

The Census of India 2011 data is being collected by an enumerator. Once the data is collected from a house, a Census label is pasted on the doorway. The collected data is submitted to the Unique ID Authority of India (UIDAI) for de-duplication for the creation of unique NPR IDs. Later, the Office of the Registrar General and Census Commissioner, India will complete the subsequent updates. Mr. C. Chandramouli is the present Registrar General and Census Commissioner of India.

The Census 2011 is India' s 15th National Census and the largest in the world. The estimated cost of the Census is Rs.2, 209 crores.
