Human Rights Violations: Child Abuse in Bangladesh

Children in Bangladesh are often subjected to sexual abuse and bonded labor. However, it is difficult to track down the exact number of such human rights violations, due to several reasons. Firstly, Bangladesh has a low rate of birth registrations. Sexual exploitation of children occur at all levels in the country spanning brothels, homes, workplaces, hotels and even schools.

Human Rights Violations: Disabled Children are Sexually Exploited

Human rights violations are not given much importance across Bangladesh. It is not surprising that immoral trafficking of adolescent girls is a lucrative industry in Bangladesh. Shockingly, disabled children who belong to poor families are more vulnerable to sexual abuse in Bangladesh. They are assaulted by their close family relatives, teachers and even therapists. Worse, they are addicted to drugs and prone to sexually transmitted diseases.

A study was conducted 0n 216 children and 535 adults with disabilities. The study was conducted by the Bangladesh Protibondhi Foundation (BPF) and Save the Children. Several NGO workers, teachers and family members were interviewed. The study came out with some shocking facts about child abuse in Bangladesh, such as:

  • Half of all the disabled children with poor economic status have been sexually abused.
  • Nearly, 52 % girls and 48 % boys between 7 and 18 years have been sexually abused.

According to Selina Ahmed of Save the Children, sexual abuse offences often go unpunished because the society has a negative attitude towards handicapped children and parents tend to ignore their problems or complaints.

Human Rights Violations: Rehabilitation of Victims

Many children are duped into the flesh trade, by fabricated or false offers of well-paid jobs or marriages. Rehabilitation of such victims is often very difficult, because of the social stigma and taboo associated with the issue. Further, the families of such victims are usually reluctant to accept them.

However, UNICEF has taken measures to raise the issue of child abuse and human rights violations in Bangladesh. UNICEF Bangladesh provides medical care, psychological, social and legal support to victims of sexual abuse.

The victims are taught basic life skills, such as counting, reading and writing. They are trained through a Life Skills Programme. This involves a peer to peer approach and uses the capacity of adolescent peer leaders, to facilitate awareness on social issues, such as HIV/AIDS, drugs, child abuse and other forms of exploitation. Community based dowry committees and forced marriage committees are formed to protect the children from incidents of human rights violations. UNICEF also supports the Bangladesh Ministry of Home Affairs to establish a ‘Repatriation, Rehabilitation and Reintegration Committee.’

Final Legal Take Away Tip: The incidents of child abuse and human rights violations are often tolerated silently in the Bangladeshi society. These incidents mainly occur due to poor law enforcement, poor economic status, lack of education and awareness among children on their legal rights.
