India legal news reports indicate a disturbing trend of stone pelting incidents in the state of Jammu and Kashmir. It is every citizen’s legal right to express dissent but these stone pelting incidents in the valley are not a recent trend of dissent. It has been the norm for over two years. Credible news agencies and reports from various parts of the world have documented this disturbing trend. Another trend has been that after the weekly Friday prayers are held, there are some masked teenagers who throw stones at the Indian police and paramilitary officials. This triggers severe clashes, between the security forces and the protestors. The CRPF officers often use tear gas and open firing, to curb such protests.
In a recent clash between the protestors and security officials, at least 13 people were injured and 3 were killed. The deceased protestors were identified as Ishfaq Ahmed Khanday, Imtiyaz Ahmad Itoo and Shujatul Islam.
India Legal News: Curfew Restrictions to Restore Law and Order
India legal news reports indicate that the state government has imposed curfew and sought the help of the army to control the situation of unrest in areas spanning Kashmir. Further, the government has blocked mobile phone services in Northern part of the State. Even SMS services were blocked in the entire state.
The Union Home Minister, Mr. P Chidambaram, has promised full support to the state government, to strictly impose curfew restrictions and end the unrest. The minister further blamed anti-Indian elements for attempting to exploit the situation and plead to the people to help restore law and order.

ndia legal news reports indicate strong reactions from various religious authorities, who play a positive role in making decisions in their community. The Grand Mufti of J&K, Maulana Bashir-ud-Din, clearly termed these protests in the form of stone pelting as ‘un-Islamic.’ Representing the beliefs of Indian Muslims, Maulana Bashir-ud-Din reiterated that Islam promotes ‘peace and brotherhood.’ He stated that any type of violence is against the principles of Islam.
The Mufti denied the charges of issuing any fatwa on stone pelting and strongly condemned the practice.
In a recent meeting with the Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, the Congress president, Sonia Gandhi and the Home Minister, P Chidambaram, the Mufti said, that these protestors are paid for throwing stones. He pointed out that unemployment has forced the Kashmiri youths to take up anti-social activities such as stone throwing, as an alternative to earn money.
Various India legal news reports indicate that stone pelting has become a lucrative business for youths in Kashmir, involving large sums of money that is funded by separatist organizations in the valley that have links with Pakistani terror groups.
