The global status report of the World Health Organization indicates that India has the highest number of deaths due to road accidents. Official figures for the year 2008 released by the Road Transport and Highways Minister of India reveal that 4.8 lakh accidents took place that year and a total of one lakh people died. Imagine how close we are every day to witnessing an accident or being involved in an accident every day.

A letter has been sent by the Road Transport and Highways Minister, Kamal Nath demanding establishment of 600 district-level authorized courts for settling such cases within a time period of six weeks. In the letter, the emphasis was on reducing the anguish and trauma of the victim’s family by ensuring speedy relief. The Law Minister M. Veerappa Moily indicated that this proposal seems impressive.
