India Legal News: Special Courts To be Set up for Victims of Road Accident Claims

Traffic accidents are becoming more and more common in India. Our lives are becoming busier and we spend more time in traffic jams on a daily basis. Believe it or not, our chances of being involved in a traffic accident have increased. Various India legal news reports of 2008 indicated that every five minutes an Indian is killed in a road accident.

The global status report of the World Health Organization indicates that India has the highest number of deaths due to road accidents. Official figures for the year 2008 released by the Road Transport and Highways Minister of India reveal that 4.8 lakh accidents took place that year and a total of one lakh people died. Imagine how close we are every day to witnessing an accident or being involved in an accident every day.

India Legal News: Speedy Relief for Road Accident Victims

In any road accident injury, victims or their families want to file a claim to get compensation for the extent of injury suffered by them, besides medical bills and other expenses caused due to the injury. The victims and their family members are clueless about how and when will they get compensation.

To improve the process for them, the Indian government has brought forth a proposal for setting-up special courts. The setting up of special courts is done to provide speedy compensation to victims of road accidents.

A letter has been sent by the Road Transport and Highways Minister, Kamal Nath demanding establishment of 600 district-level authorized courts for settling such cases within a time period of six weeks. In the letter, the emphasis was on reducing the anguish and trauma of the victim’s family by ensuring speedy relief. The Law Minister M. Veerappa Moily indicated that this proposal seems impressive.
