Kerala Padmanabhaswamy Temple Treasure: Cellar B Will Be opened After Consultation With Supreme Court
India Legal News: An enormous cache of unseen treasure was discovered from the 16th Century Sri Padmanabhaswamy temple this week, raising tremendous Indian and foreign media interest.
The Supreme Court backed seven-member group in connivance with the top court will take a decision whether to open Cellar ‘B’ or not only on Friday. The final cellar was hard to break through because the vault was made out of thick steel plates and it is believed that this cellar contains a sizable collection of jewels.
A tentative value of the treasure from the Kerala temple that has been assessed so far comes to Rs. 1 Lakh Crore or £12 bn. However, it is cent percent sure that the actual estimate of the total treasure is much, much higher than what’s being speculated, primarily because of the antiquity of jewels and the amount, both. Clearing what belongs to whom, a senior government official was quoted saying, “It (treasure) is the property of the temple. It has nothing to do with the state.” The Supreme Court of India will take a final decision of what happens to the wealth once the assessment of the total treasure belonging to the temple completes.
