Law jobs in India are gaining popularity due to increased civic consciousness and awareness about the legal framework in India. A legal professional or lawyer is a person licensed by the Government to practice law, give legal advice and represent his clients in legal matters.

How to Get Law Jobs: Qualifications Required

To get law jobs in India, you may either enroll in a 3 year LLB course after graduation or 5 year B.A. LLB course after completing Std XII. The entry to a LLB course depends on your graduation marks. Also, some institutions conduct entrance examinations for entry in law courses in India. Several institutions also offer diploma programs and P.G. courses (LLM) in various streams of law. The law colleges in India provide practical training along with theoretical knowledge. 

Law Jobs in India: Career Prospects and Remuneration 

A lawyer can find law jobs in India in public or private organizations. However, to practice law in India, the law graduates have to enroll with the Local/State/Central Bar Councils. They can find employment in various departments of the Central and the State Governments. Lawyers can also work with law firms, NGOs or as legal counsels.
 

Types of Law Jobs

Among the wide range of law jobs open to lawyers are:
  • Government Services: Law jobs are available in central services after clearing the relevant exams. They can be appointed in State legal services through SPSC exams.  

  • Subordinate Judges: An aspirant who qualifies the Law Service Commission or State Public Service Commission may get law jobs like that of a subordinate judge such as a Magistrate and Sub-Magistrate, Munsiff and so on. Further, he may be promoted as a judge of Sessions Court, High Court and the Supreme Court. 

  • Public Defenders: The profile of these law jobs is to those who are unable to afford a lawyer. They are appointed by the Court.

  • Notary or Oath Commissioner: Appointed by the Government, these law  jobs involve verification and authentication of legal documents. 

  • Defense Services: There are law jobs in defense services, such as Army Air force and Navy. They carry out courts of enquiry and court martial. 

  • Teachers/Professors: Lawyers can also opt for law jobs that have a teaching background, by serving in reputed law institutes. 

  • Company Secretary: A lawyer can be also find employment as a company secretary in a corporate house.  

Most significantly, lawyers can be appointed as Judges, Attorneys and Solicitor General by the President of India.
