Legal Workshop Series: Solicitor General of India on the Administration of Justice

On 31st July 2010, a distinguished audience had gathered to attend the legal workshop series held at Vigyan Bhavan, New Delhi. Mr. Gopal Subramanium, the Solicitor General of India & Chairman of the Bar Council of India, addressed the audience briefly. Seated on the dais, there was President Pratibha Patil, Justice S.H. Kapadia, the Chief Justice of India, Harish Salve, Sr Advocate, Pravin H. Parekh, Sr Advocate and President of Confederation of Indian Bar, and Ravindra Shrivastava, the Vice President, Confederation of Indian Bar.

Legal Workshop Series: In our CJI, we have a Leader, Says Solicitor General of India

At the legal workshop inaugural session, Gopal Subramanium spoke about concurrent professional reforms that should chiefly comprise of the following:

  • Quality of legal education.
  • Computerization and automation of court through specialized courts and so on.
  • Making alternative dispute resolution a successful endeavor.

He expressed the unspoken thoughts of the distinguished audience by declaring, “In our CJI, we have a leader, whose foremost quality is knowledge.”

Mr. Gopal Subramanium, the Solicitor General of India, stated, “A Judge who feels deficient in knowledge will make mistakes. It is also important for a judge to consider all political, social and legal issues to ensure that governance does not rule over public interest.”   

He also expressed concern about the judge population ratio in the country, stating that it requires a more serious look.
