Minimum Drinking Age: Bollywood Actor Imran Khan Moves HC

India Legal News:  Popular bollywood actor Imran Khan, 28 along with a management graduate Vedant Malik of Bandra yesterday filed a PIL (Public Interest Litigation) before the Bombay High Court that challenges Maharashtra government’s decision to up legal age for alcohol consumption to 25 years, from 21 presently.

Citing a constitutional right under article 226 of the Constitution of India, the actor was represented by Mr. Ameet Naik from Naik and Naik Co who filed the PIL on the actor’s behalf. The PIL stressed on ‘equal protection of their settled fundamental and/or legal right(s) of equality, privacy and personal liberty’ as one of the reasons.

The ‘Delhi Belly’ actor is a nephew of actor Aamir Khan and he has quoted in the past saying, “By this PIL I am not promoting drinking but fighting for the constitutional right of the youth in India. When a 21-year-old is allowed to marry, vote and do several other things, then he or she should also be allowed to indulge in any legal activity including consumption of liquor.” The hearing of this PIL will be informed at a later stage, confirmed Mr. Ameet Naik.

The PIL was formulated after the respondent came to know from media reports that the State government plans to introduce a new de-addiction Policy, which enforces minimum age (i.e. 25 years), for the issuance of permits for the possession, use and consumption of liquor within the State of Maharashtra.
