NHRC Takes Action on Death Report of 16 Children in Mumbai Slum
Legal News India: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has acted upon a media report which alleged that 16 children (six years and below) died of malnutrition and related diseases, in Shivaji Nagar, Mumbai. The death incidents occurred between April and December 2010. The media report also mentioned that 40-60 percent of the children in Mumbai slums are malnourished.
The NHRC observed that the death incidents, if reported correctly, raise issues of human right violations of the children in the city. The Commission dispatched notices to the State Chief Health Secretary as well as the Union Health Ministry to submit reports on the same.
The media report had alleged that the malnutrition scale in Mumbai suggested the failure of the Integrated Child Development Scheme (ICDS).
