No Import of Cheetahs From Namibia: Supreme Court To Government

India Legal News:The Supreme Court of India has decided to stay the Union government of India’s plan to import over a dozen Cheetahs from an African state. A setback for the Ministry of Environment and Forest (MoEF), as the reintroduction of cheetahs in the Indian sub-continent was Minister Jairam Ramesh’s pet project to introduce Namibian Cheetahs to the Kunopalpur sanctuary in Madhya Pradesh. The SC stressed that the home bred species should be given priority.

The bench observed, “Why are you bothered about cheetah in Africa. Let us give priority to our own species. ” Amicus curiae, PS Narasimha also said, the National Board of Wildlife was not consulted before. Cheetah diplomacy was also exercised but failed after the Iranian government demand of pair of Lions in exchange of their Cheetahs was declined by the Gujarat government in 2009- 2010.
