Orissa Is Odisha Now

Indian Legal News: In a bid to eliminate British legacy and instill local pride, the state of Orissa will now be known as Odisha and the language spoken and specified will be ‘Odia’ instead of ‘Oriya’.
The Lok Sabha today passed the long standing demand under the Constitution Amendment Bill. Home Minister P.Chidambaram said that the demands of the people of Orissa have been met. Some other cities/states that have undergone name changes in the past include:
- Arunachal Pradesh (previously called North-East Frontier Agency (NEFA)
- Kanpur (previously Cawnpore)
- Thiruvananthapuram (previously Trivandrum)
- Mumbai (previously Bombay)
- Kolkata (previously Calcutta)
- Pune (previously Poona)
- Chennai (previously Madras)
- Kochi (previously Cochin)
