Project Unique Identification Numbers – Aadhaar Launched Today

 India Law News:  Touted one of the most ambitious projects of the UPA government, the Rs3,000 Crore the Unique Identification Numbers (Aadhaar) has been formally launched today from Maharashtra's Tembhli village in Nandurbar district. Chairman of the Unique Identification Authority of India, Mr. Nandan Nilekani expressed hope of optimism, he said, "Many people in our country don't have their identity cards. UID will help them. UID will be recognised everywhere. One UID will be issued to one person." Almost 1400 villagers are being enrolled in UID’s inaugural programme.  
 
The unique 12 digit number will be able to record information like the individual’s name, facial features, biometrics etc. The UIDA project was first initiated in February 2009 with assistance of the planning commission.
 
The sole purpose remained to provide a unique identification number (UID) to every Indian citizen primarily to eliminate possibility of fraudulent practice and unethical behavior. 
 
 

Features of the UIDAI model

  • The UID will just provide identity and not citizenship

  • It will be a pro-poor approach

  • Indian residents will be enrolled after verification

  • The UIDAI number is not going to contain intelligence

Based on the information available, The enrollment of UIDAI seeks needs following  may seek the following demographic and biometric information in order to issue a UID number:
Name
Date of birth
Gender
Father’s name
Father’s UID number (optional for adult residents)
Mother’s name
Mother’s UID number (optional for adult residents)
Address (Permanent and Present)
Expiry date
Photograph
