Road Accidents Due to Cell Phone Usage while Driving

Did you know that 80% of car accidents in the US are due to inattentive drivers who spend more time talking on the cell phones while driving? This is a real statistic according to the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

A combination of talking on mobile phones and driving can be quite troublesome, as it invites not only driving accidents, but also penalties and punishments. The latest research conducted at the University of Utah also suggests that talking on cell phones, whether hands-free or hand-held, while driving leads to impairment similar to that of a drunk driver.

Several Indian states have also modified their driving laws that make talking on phones while driving a punishable offense. For instance, the Delhi Police charges offenders a fine of Rs.1000. The Indian government is now considering tweaking the driving law (Motor Vehicles Act) to impose a fine of Rs. 2000 or six months imprisonment on those caught talking-and-driving.

For those resulting in road accidents, the punishment could be suspension of driving license for six months. However, do you think the punishment is just?

Mobile Phones and Driving: Why Is it Dangerous?

cell-phone while driving in India, dangerous, fine, road accidentWell, the government is certainly bang on the decision. Statistics reveal that a large portion of driving accidents in India is causedby mobile phone usage while driving. The reason is that while we talk on phones, our brains concentrate on processing the phone conversation and ignores any other inputs. That is, when you talk on the phone while driving, although you may see a pedestrian

walking dangerous close, your brain takes a tad longer to process that information, thus increasing your reaction time and wasting crucial seconds while on the move.

Countries that Ban Talking on Mobile Phones and Driving

Here is a glimpse into some countries that have banned cell phone usage and driving: Australia, Bahrain, China, France, Egypt, Germany, Greece, Hong Kong, Italy and UK, among others. Several states in the US, Pakistan, India and Mexico and several Canadian provinces have also banned the use of cell phones while driving.

Hi,

Though the law prevails, believe the system is not stringent is keeping the law effective. However at the same time, there must be specific areas where these should be monitored like the traffic juctions, toll collection areas, roads to and after the bridge etc. Most of these accidents tend to happen close to these areas and apart from the law, high resolution surveillance system, should be there to monitor the same.

However, unless untill the individual takes note of this and changes his/her attitude, whatever be the law in place, can only act as controlling measure and not as a change phenomena.

Please be assured, i don't use my phone while driving... but, you know it is funny... the ones who make these laws for the common man to follow, have no laws for the inventors, service providers & MNC's.

For instance when the technology has advanced so much, how long will it take for the service providers, mobile developers or others involved in the process to create software which will restrict any mobile user from using his/ her cellphone over & above the speed of 20kmph-30kmph? This will automatically have the consumer halt for urgent calls making or receiving... wouldn't this solve the whole problem???

Then why isn't the law pushing the money makers (in billions & trillions) to do something which will bring about betterment of all, else than creating laws for the common man to pay more as penalty while they are already paying the above? Try finding out the answer... WHY??? ...

I feel disgusted at the ignorance of the common man & his / her level of intelligence... We just follow to what is told to us... never question it. WHY??? The consumer is the one who makes or breaks a product & because the consumers is blindly following... the few are reaping the benefits at your cost.

Wake up Indian's primarily... as Indians have the capacity to change the entire world & make it a better place to live for everyone... by just questioning & it is your right if only chosen to in the right direction.

Hey... there is a brilliant idea above for a software engineer to make the most of it... a Bharat Ratna might come your way too, if succeeded & have government implement it... which will be a dream & will never fulfill in current scenario. But do it anyways, if i am able to achieve my dream... we will work together for the betterment of our race together.
-------------------------------------------

The same goes in the case of automobiles... when a ad is made to sell the product what does it showcase??? - - Its "Speed", its "Speedometer" & levels it can reach... the law does not seems to take notice of it, but when a consumer drives at that speed the protectors of law stand on the roads with speed detectors to rob the common man who has already paid the maker to make him rich & now is making the law protector rich or the government for its illegal law.

I am not saying their shouldn't be laws, but it should be equal for all... not one for someone & other for the rest. And logic & common sense should survive.

And believe me if the cars are only built to reach the maximum of 60kmph according to the law (which will never happen in current scenario)... we will live in heaven again as sales of cars will stop or will only be used for long distance travel (Bombay to Pune etc.) & bicycles will be out, cities will be free of pollution & traffics, people will become healthy again, will not pay through their noses for the fuel & wars will end for fuel, stress levels will vanish from ones life & the vicious cycle will break... which has made human a animal in the current scenario where one steps over any other to achieve anything....

The above might be a dream but is not impossible, only if humanity wakes up to the reality & collectively dares to question a few. It is you who make these few of what they are & when you decide it will be time to payback for them.
