Road travel can be made safer if you follow some simple safety regulations. For example, how often do you see people parking their vehicles in a public place that can cause inconvenience to others or in a place that clearly indicates is not the place for parking?

Parking a vehicle at the wrong places can cause obstruction and undue inconvenience to others during their road travel.  Section 122 of the Motor Vehicles Act reads:

No person in charge of a motor vehicle shall cause or allow the vehicle or any trailer to be abandoned or to remain at rest on any public place in such a position or in such a condition or in such circumstances as to cause or likely to cause danger, obstruction or undue inconvenience to other users of the public place or to the passengers.

Safety Regulations and Car Parking Tips

Section 15, Rules of the Road Regulations Act states that any driver of a motor vehicle should park it in a way that it does not cause inconvenience to others, cause obstruction or danger or park the vehicle in any of the following places:

  • At or near a road crossing
  • At the top of a hill
  • On a bridge
  • On a footpath meant for pedestrians to use
  • On the wrong side of the road
  • Near a traffic light
  • Near a hospital entrance or school or bus stop
  • Near a pedestrian crossing
  • On a crowded main road with speeding traffic
  • In any place that causes obstruction to pedestrians or other parked vehicles

Violation of Safety Regulations Lead to Penalty

Section 201 of the Motor Vehicles Act clearly stated that a penalty will be imposed on any driver who causes obstruction during road travel and obstructs the free flow of traffic. The penalty for violating safety regulations will be fifty rupees per hour and if the vehicle is towed away by a government agency, the towing charges will also be recovered from the vehicle owner/driver. The penalty will be recovered by the officer as stipulated by the State Government.
