The ban has been imposed on all educational institutes, in accordance with a resolution, passed on July 28, 2010. The resolution was passed by the Gujarat’s State Education Department. Gujarat has become the first state in India to pass such a resolution. The resolution is reported to have been passed to check distractions caused by mobile phones in educational institutions.

The United Arab Emirates has banned cell phone users from availing the email, instant-messaging and web-browsing services, on their Blackberry mobile devices. This decision was taken in response to a long-running battle, over security issues, with the maker of Blackberry devices, the Research in Motion (RIM).
