India Legal News: CJI Announces Measures to Improve Judicial Functioning

India legal news reports have continuously reported about the increasing number of pending cases that are piling up in the lower courts. These courts are greatly overburdened, with over 3.5 crores pending cases. A majority of the district courts and law enforcement officers have to work under very difficult conditions, such as long hours of power cuts, no fans and minimal infrastructure. However, the conditions of the subordinate courts may soon improve. The Chief Justice of India, S.H. Kapadia, on July 5, 2010, proposed some solid measures to improve the functioning and infrastructure of the lower courts. The CJI said that a special Bench will be formed to hear the problems being faced by the lower courts, every Monday.
