Justice to Rape Victims in Cambodia: What Should be Done?

Crime against women in Cambodia is on the rise, which is evident from police reports and data gathered by several Non-government Organizations. However, due to inefficiency in the crime monitoring system, the true extent of the situation is yet to be acknowledged. What is sadder is the fact that the rape victims are being denied justice on a large extent. Loopholes in the judiciary system enable perpetrators to escape punishment without any efforts.

CJI Proposes Creation of Compensatory Fund for Victims in Rape Cases

'On 8th March 2010, the world is celebrating 'International Womens Day'. India's Chief Justice K. G. Balakrishnan stirred a hornet's nest when he stated today that “due regard” should be given to a rape victim's wish if she chooses to marry the rapist or have the baby conceived as a result of this forced crime. The CJI stated this while addressing the national consultation on access to justice, relief and rehabilitation of rape victims. The event was organized to mark International Women's Day. However, women's rights activists were not happy with the CJI's statement.
