Indian Law: Matriarchal Social System in Kerala

In the present day world, traditional matriarchal societies are very rare though women related laws and issues continue to soar. However, certain modified watered down versions of this system can be still found in certain parts of India. Typically, a matriarchal system refers to a social setup that offers greater power to women in activities relating to allocation, exchange and production but this has little to do with Indian law. Not only this, women in the matriarchal society have political, social and cultural power. This is in contrast to the prevailing patriarchal system which treats men as supreme and offers them full responsibility for the welfare of the family and the community as a whole. The pages of history show that men enjoyed and managed positions of power and challenge than women. However, in some parts of India, the matriarchal system is followed such as in certain parts of Kerala, Bengal and within certain communities of Meghalaya. This discussion will cover the matriarchal system in Kerala.
