Voter’s Right to Know About their Candidate

The Constitution of India guarantees citizens with the right to know about the electoral candidates. In a landmark case of Union of India v. Association for Democratic Reforms, AIR 2002 SC 2112, the Supreme Court held that the amended Electoral Reforms Law passed by the Parliament violates the provision of Article 19 (1) (a) of Constitution of India. Article 19 (1) (a) provides for citizen’s right to know.

India Legal News: House Panel Suggests For Withdrawal of Road Safety Bill

India legal news reports indicate that just two months after the introduction of the Road Safety and Traffic Management Board Bill, the House panel has recommended its withdrawal. The Government introduced the bill on May 4, 2010, in the Lok Sabha with the intention to set up the National Road Safety and Traffic Management Board.

Women's Reservation Bill: Empowering Women or Inhibiting Merit?

March 9, incidentally a day after International Women’s Day, witnessed the historic sanction of the controversial Women's Reservation Bill in the Rajya Sabha. The sanction happened after more than a decade of deliberation, with constant resistance from majority of members of the House. In fact, several opponents of the Women’s Bill turned physically hostile while the House was in session, a day before the Bill was passed. Seven such House members were voted to be suspended for the remaining term for their behavior.
