How many times in your life have you felt helpless with the everyday travel travails? How often have you wished you had applied for a driving license to be able to drive peacefully to your destination? I guess, at least once a day, when you have need to push your way through the overcrowded buses and trains in our country. In fact, you are not alone in this journey, for several of us do not have a driving licenses because we are apprehensive of the complexities in obtaining an effective license. So, here is a guide to the license types that driving license offices across India issue to the eligible candidates.
Driving License Applications and Types
It is mandatory for driving license applicants to prove their road rules knowledge to obtain their driving licenses. Obtaining the license is a two-step process that involves passing the oral and driving tests. Applicants must first get a learner’s license before applying for a permanent one. Effective driving license is a license that authorizes a person to drive a particular category of vehicle.
Here is a peek into the different effective driving licenses.
- Learner License: It is a temporary license that is valid up till six months from its issuance date.
- Permanent License: Those with the learners’ license are eligible for the permanent license after 30 days and within 180 days of issuance of the learner’s license. A person well-versed about vehicle systems, and traffic rules and regulation is eligible to obtain permanent driving license.
- Duplicate driving license: This is issued in case of loss, theft or damage of the original license. The person must submit FIR of the lost license, application in Form LLD and challan clearance report from the RTA office. You must keep a photocopy of your driving license to facilitate finding your records at the issuing authority in case you lose them.
- International Driving License: Issued by the motor licensing authority, this license requires the applicant to submit his address proof, birth certificate, a valid passport and visa. The validity of the license is for one year.
- Two-wheeler License: A two-wheeler license is the permit to drive two-wheeler vehicles, such as bikes, scooters and moped.
- Light Motor Vehicle License: It permits one to drive vehicles such as motor car, taxi, jeep and auto rickshaws.
Lastly, there is the heavy motor vehicle license which allows a person to drive heavy vehicles, such as trucks, buses, cranes, coaches.

Its not true...According to the Motor Vehicles Act 1988,one is issued a permanent driving license after 30 days and within 180 days of issuing the learner's license.
Some RTOs issue DL by simply writing Scooter/Car. Not sure instead of writing 2 wheelers and LMVs, why they specifically mention Scooter and Car..Does it mean you can not drive other 2 wheelrs and jeeps like scorpio or safari.
